Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare and plan for conducting atmospheric monitoring
   • Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation required to conduct atmospheric monitoring
   • Access, interpret and apply mine environmental data relevant to the work activities
   • Identify and obtain required equipment and resources
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures according to workplace procedures
   • Coordinate activities with relevant personnel
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for emergency situations
2. Carry out surveys and sampling
   • Establish and monitor a safe work environment
   • Inspect and test sampling equipment and ensure functionality, safety and compliance according to manufacturer specifications
   • Identify the appropriate survey, sampling techniques and sampling type to be carried out according to workplace procedures
   • Conduct surveys and sampling according to workplace procedures
   • Identify and respond to hazardous and emergency situations according to workplace procedures
3. Conduct primary analysis and respond to results
   • Prepare written records and analyse the results of sampling and surveys
   • Determine survey and sampling anomalies and actions that can be undertaken to rectify the anomalies
   • Report anomalies and actions required to rectify to the relevant personnel
   • Clean and maintain the plant and equipment, inspect to ensure serviceability and rectify or report any faults or issues to relevant personnel
   • Process written maintenance records according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

conduct atmospheric monitoring on at least two occasions, including:

identifying, obtaining and operating equipment and resources for atmospheric testing

inspecting and testing sampling equipment

identifying and applying surveying and sampling techniques

using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones

processing written records and reports.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures and confirm that the work activity is compliant

implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for conducting atmospheric monitoring

work effectively with others to conduct atmospheric monitoring in a way that meets all required outcomes

communicate clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions and to determine coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

key policies, procedures and documentation required to conduct atmospheric monitoring, including:

organisation and site requirements

equipment maintenance systems

site environmental requirements and constraints

principles and techniques for:

identifying and analysing survey and sampling methods

identifying the characteristics of samples taken

determining tools and sampling equipment and their use

interpreting a mine plan

identifying relevant hazards and emergencies

techniques for coordinating and communicating job activities with others.
